INDIVIDUAL ASSESSMENT AND SUPPORT

Here at Talking Lab we believe that a child's developing communication skills are best supported in their natural environment, by the adults who care for and interact with them on a daily basis. Our unique coaching method ensures that adults are well equipped to help children reach their full communication potential with programmes tailored to the child's specific needs. See below to find out more about the types of difficulties your child may be experiencing

COMMON COMMUNICATION CONCERNS

All children learn at their own pace - and some will pick up language much quicker than others. There are lots of things you can do to help your child understand and talk more. It's a great idea to get in touch with us for an assessment

My child is difficult to understand

Lots of children are little chatterboxes but can sound very unclear, particularly to unfamiliar listeners. Usually, these children are making consistent sound pattern changes because they find certain sounds easier to say than others. We can help find out which are the tricky sounds and show you how to work on these at home.

My child gets stuck on their words

A large proportion of children will experience a period of stuttering or stammering at some point in their language development. Try not to worry - a vast majority will grow out of it with no extra input! However it's best to speak to us to see what kind of a stammer is presenting, and the best course of action to take to manage the sticky words!

My child won't talk to other adults

Some children may be happy to talk at home and with familiar adults but will freeze up if expected to talk to unfamiliar adults or in other environments. This is known as 'selective mutism'. Talking Lab delivers a special tried-and-tested programme designed to help the child overcome their anxieties about talking to unfamiliar people.

My child is waiting for an NHS appointment

Waiting lists can be so frustrating! We understand that sooner is better and we aim to fit you in as quickly as possible so that no time is wasted worrying! You are still entitled to NHS support even while receiving private therapy, and we can communicate and work with NHS services to ensure your child has the best support possible.

My child has developmental problems

The world of support services can be a scary and overwhelming place when your child has autism, Down syndrome or any number of other diagnoses. A speech and language therapist can help to identify communication goals, discuss and deliver different intervention options, provide resources and training, signpost to and coordinate with other organisations, and attend meetings with other professionals.
